Check out this article talking about the merger of Sprint and Nextel (the 5th and 3rd largest cell phone companies, respectively).
That was kind of unexpected.... But I guess it makes sense. So pretty much there will only be 3 major cell phone carriers in US now. I wonder if that's a good or a bad thing....

I think this is a Sprint plan to bait Verizon into buying them. The cost to merge the CDMA (SprintPCS) and iDEN (Nextel) technologies would be substantial (i.e. they'd either have to drop one or everything would need to be dual-band).
On the other hand, Nextel was just given a chunk of lucritive high-bandwidth spectrum for thier "WiDEN" service, so maybe if they have to change frequencies anyway now might be a great time to do it....
