A Home At The End of the World

I just devoured the novel "A Home at the End of the World" by Michael Cunningham (author of the hours) which will be released in a few weeks as a movie by the same name. I started the book at 10pm last night after I purchased it and I finished it at 5pm today. It was that good.

The story is about two friends Jonothan and Bobby who grow up together and have experienced their own tragedies. Jonothan, who is gay, moves to NYC for college and lives with Clare, 11 years older and a divorcee. Several years later, Bobby moves to New York and moves in with Jon and starts a relationship with Clare. The book is told from their three points of view along with Jon's mother Alice.

The novel was tragic and sweet. I haven't fully digested it yet, but it leads me to questions about my own life, family, friendship and how there are no easy lines to draw between them. I think it refects my life in some very strange ways. And maybe my feelings shouldn't be questioned in the ways I always have. Perhaps we should reject convention and go with what our hearts tell us.

I look forward to the movie. Check out the trailer. I was not sure that Colin Farrell would make a good Bobby but it looks like he will. I really like the choice of Sissy Spacek for the role of Alice. I haven't heard of or seen Dallas Roberts before so I can't comment on him.
