Les Blogues du Mal

So, I just discovered the French word for "Blog" which is "Blogue". I love it! It's so...French! Actually, I should say that his is not French but Quebecois. It was on a "Site Web" for a Quebec Political Candidate. I'm sure that the Alliance Francaise will not be so amenable to such a dirty word like "Blogue". It will probably be used, however, even if it's unofficial.

Another cool thing is that André Boisclair was just elected to the Parti Quebecois, who became the first openly gay person to be elected head of a major political party in North America. According to a current poll, 70% said that they would vote for him as Premier of Quebec. He must be fabulous. He has also said that as head of the party, he will have a new referendum to separate Quebec from Canada in the next two years.

I wonder if Canada would actually allow a province to secede, or what the process would be. I often think about the ability to secede from a nation, the constitutionality, the legality, the morality and such. For example, secession of a state is not allowed (see Civil War). It's not that the US cared what the states did so much, but had a problem with the taking of government land. There are so many issues with that. For example, in the last referendum, the referendum to secede was narrowly defeated in Quebec. However, what if it narrowly won? Is it fair to completely change government and more, just because a little more than half of the province wants to? It's impossible to get a unanimous agreement, so if there are great reasons to leave, the secession could be vetoed by one person. I don't think Quebec will secede. It's just stupid. But I think a lot of Canadians would like it. But then everyone would hate the Quebecois. But not me. I love you.

The other day my dad defended the spelling (once again) of potato by Dan Quayle back in 1582. He said that it USED to be spelled potatoe. He looked it up in the dictionary and it was an "alternate" spelling. He also said that he used to spell envelope, like enveloppe. I don't know if that's true or not. I think the invokation of Dan Quayle should be punishable by law.

I should tell my students the French word for blog. But then what if they asked me if I had a blog? I'd have to be like, "Ummm..no."
