House of Very Long Flying Daggers And Engagements

I don't think I told most people, but my sister Ashley, who allegedly looks like Briney Spears, got fired from her job. Here's the shugs: Ashley worked at Travel Agency. Ashley got sexually harrassed by coworker asking her bra size and underware selection du jour. Supervisor said how she likes to "jew people down". Supervisor said that God should have written to kill homosexuals in the Bible so it would be more easily justifyable (or something) Ashley worked there for a while and had some trouble so she asked for help. She got assistance. Then a month later she was told she was on probation. They said in 30 days if they weren't happy w/ her performance she would be fired. She asked what she did wrong and they said it was the "whole package". Vague? Lame? Bad management? YES. So then after the 30 days they said nothing. Then two weeks later they said she was fired immediately from her old position but she could take a new technical position. She did that. She liked it better. She had a better boss. Then the day her boss left to go out of town on business, the other supervisors fired her for not being "honest". She was not honest because allegedly she would do her work incorrectly but say it was correct. Like she booked a trip for tuesday but it was supposed to be wednesday, and then would initial it. This is not being dishonest, this is making a mistake! Bollocks, I say! So she's been fired and she was very upset since she got fired but now she gets unemployment and she's living at home so it's not so bad. Anyway, I had to share it will the fans of my sister.

Currently in Property we are learning how to buy/sell a house and how to write a contract for sale. What? A practical lesson in Law School? How dare they! I can actually apply this in the real world! I *heart* property.

Tomorrow, I'm going to Ann Arbor and Jay and I will be seeing "House of Flying Daggers" or "A Very Long Engagement" or both. Ok, probably not both. I'm very excited. Then Jay's friend Eric is having a party on Saturday and I shall be attending. I think Jay is going to make me drink Chai. I dislike Chai. It's like drinking pumpkin pie tea. Blah. I tried "Holiday Spice" yesterday (a month late) but it's not bad. It's like "Pumpkin Pie Pepsi" or PPP. I love Pumpkin Pie, but not Pumpkin Pie flavored beverages. One time in Coldwater, MI on an excursion to historic Allen, MI, Jenn and I stopped at a restaurant. Jenn got a French Dip and the au jus tasted like pumpkin pie au jus. Who puts nutmeg and cinnamon in the au jus? And it looked like there was a jellyfish in the malt vinegar. Anyway, I don't like the Chai. Or the dirty Chai. I like Tea. I like Coffee. I like Coffee AND Tea. But not very often. I also like Pumpkin Pie but I do not like "Punkin Prints".

Did you see Alias last night? It was pretty good. I really like Nadia. Jack is very sketchy this season. It sad to see him and Syd fighting. I want more Rambaldi stuff though. Where did the Rambaldi go? I also saw Lost last night too. I've watched it two weeks in a row. I'm surprised how good it is. I wouldn't have expected it, but they have done a very good job with that show. Oh and I watched Law and Order and it was ok. But then Blonde DA got fired! And she's a lesbian. I didn't know she's a lesbian! Next week: New Brunette DA farks up majorly. I think Sam Waterston get cross and looks like he's constipated. Actually he always looks like that.... But really. Who fires a DA for being passionate? You take state prosecutors when you can find them. It's rare you'll find a lawyer who will work for $13 a hour.

Electronics are out of control. I now have four personal electronic devices for recharging every day on my night stand. And that's not including my notebook PC. It's out of control! I have a power strip just to recharge everything. I wish there was a universal type port or power charger thingy so I could charge multiple devices with the same plug. Or I could just use them interchangeably. Or I wish the transformer converter thing in the plug fit better on the power strip.

I think I'm getting converted to the side of the Apple. It is wooing me with the currency of cuteness and compatibility. Argh! I can't tell if it's the dark side or light side of computing. I would have to applaude the ingenuity of Apple. And chastise Microsoft and its cronies for not playing fair. I probably won't ever get an Apple b/c I'm just so used to PCs, but maybe someday. If I had money I would have both. But why? Argh! Oh, and I'm not a fan of the Ipod Shuffle. Not only does it sound like a line dance from the early 90s, but it doesn't have a display. I think Apple should have been more creative to have a display of some kind, even if it's not a typical LCD display. I have no desire to download 250 songs into a random shuffle, onto a little chewing gum thingy. And apple, the reason the Ipod Mini is selling so well is because people like color. WHY IS EVERYTHING WHITE???? I hate White. i would rather have Black if you're going to have one color.

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS: Near the end of the Tang Dynasty, police deputies Jin (Kaneshiro) and Leo (Lau) tangle with Mei (Ziyi), a dancer suspected of having ties to a revolutionary faction known as the House of Flying Daggers. Enraptured by her, the deputies concoct a plan to save her from capture, and Jin leads her north in what becomes a perilous journey into the unknown.

A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT: From the director and star of Amelie (Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Audrey Tautou) comes a very different love story, A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT, based on the acclaimed novel by Sebastien Japrisot. The film is set in France near the end of World War I in the deadly trenches of the Somme, in the gilded Parisian halls of power, and in the modest home of an indomitable provincial girl. It tells the story of this young woman's relentless and sometimes comic search for her fiancée, who has disappeared. He is one of five French soldiers believed to have been court-martialed under mysterious circumstances and pushed out of an allied trench into an almost-certain death in no-man's land. What follows is an investigation into the arbitrary nature of secrecy, the absurdity of war, and the enduring passion, intuition and tenacity of the human heart.

I *heart* Audrey Button! And Shelley Button! Sadly, the Puppy has now been defiled and is dead to us. Alas, poor Puppy, I knew him well....

I can't believe my best friend was fired and she didn't even tell me! I guess that is what fake best friends are for. A good friend of mine was fired recently for "not paying attention to detail." Which I suppose is important in the whole finance thing and when you make 80 thousand, but seriously. Uncalled for on both accounts.

As for the fate of Apple, I can't decide. I recently discovered that the mini ipod is only mini fun. And accomplishes minimal things. And forces me to store all of the songs on my computer. And doesn't allow me to make a playlist without my computer. And doesn't seem to let me stop the song without 1.Pausing it or 2.Shutting the whole thing off. Picky, yes, but come on... I have a cd player that will not skip if you throw it against the wall. Yet my mini IPOD skips (yes, I exchanged it because the little I DO know about the stupid thing is that it is not to skip). I would return it but I got it as a present and would hurt the feelings of the person that decided for no apparent reason I wanted an ipod.

I too watched Law & Order. And quickly realized that the two new cops are no substitute for Ben and Jerry and that the only reason I would continue to watch the original show was the blond, there was a good article about her in Stuff Magazine(don't ask). Then she was fired. There goes that.

On iPods and line dancing...

1. To the previous commentor...The iPod mini has all the functionality of the regular iPod. You can make on-the-go playlists. If your mini can't, it's because its software isn't up to date and you should download the latest from Apple. And if it skips, there is either a problem with the audio files, or a problem with your ipod. (mine NEVER skips...ever). I agree with the "lack of a stop button" problem...but I wonder if pausing isn't the same thing.

2. Ryan...I agree with your hesitance with the shuffle...however, it really is aimed at a different type of customer. If you look at the market, there are many $99 flash based MP3 players without displays.

3. The white iPod sells better than the minis do. Colors are nice, but unfortunately most people would rather have a neutral one. Also, Apple has a problem making things in a variety of colors because then they have to deal with lots of leftovers of unpopular colors.

The thing I was most excited about was the Mac Mini, because, I think a lot of people who have iPods and PCs will think, hey, this iPod works pretty well, and they have all those expensive Apples at the Apple Store, but I don't need all the monitor and keyboard and mouse, so I'll try out this OS "X" and see what all the fuss is about.

(Yes, I am a dork for constantly reloading 4 or 5 different Mac news/rumors sites during the live keynote. I love the phrase "One more thing...")

I did the same thing! (reloading the rumor sites..)

This is what using Apple's products does to you. Very few people just "use" them. Most owners end up not only loving their own computers, but Apple as a company.

By the way, if you haven't visited Spymac.com, you should. Not a rumor site, but probably the best mac community on the web.

Apple = Cult. I guess if you have to be in a cult, then the Apple Cult is the best.

Interestingly 20% of the people reading my blog use a Mac OS. Humpfh.

So I think the Mac Mini is a very smart move. I would be much more likely to buy a Mac now. Of course the iBooks are very expensive. I just think it should come with some kind of personal network option or wireless mouse/keyboard capability. Honestly I would like to buy a computer w/o all the peripheral stuff. I'd rather mix and match. Of course for the most part alot of the peripherals that come with a pc are crappy so they are essentially free.

I just hate white. White is so not fun. Black is better. Or dark grey.

Even though I hate Macs because they don't give you your disk when you want it. I honestly hope that someone overthrows the evil empire of Microsoft. It might as well be Apple.

I think that Apple's are cute. That's it. The $499 Mac Mini has no keyboard, no mouse, no monitor - no value. By the time you bought the stuff to actually use it, you'll be spending another $200-$500. Conversely, I can go to Dell or Gateway and get a comperable PC with keyboard, mouse, and monitor for about $400.

As for the Shuffle, it's the player only a Mac Cult Member could love. Almost every flash-based MP3 player has a screen. The Nomad Muvo is one example to the contrary, but it's a freak.

I do think the iPod and iPod Minis are very cool and I totally understand why they are so popular. However, if I was going to buy a hard-drive based music player, I'd get one a Rio Karma because it's smaller than an iPod and plays MP3, WMA, Wav, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, etc.

And finally, Apple and Microsoft are both sketchy. Both try to benefit from lack of interoperbility and that hurts consumers. I prefer Microsoft b/c they have more products that I enjoy (like my iPAQ which runs Windows Mobile), but that doesn't make Apple "bad"...just a little creepy like the Saturn Cult ;)

I think that saying peripherals for a Mac Mini is $200-$500 is a little much. Do macs use the same keyboards/mice/monitors as IBMs? I don't know. If they do then I could just buy a Mac Mini and then be set to go. If you have to buy special Mac stuff, then it that is stupid and it would be bad.

I think that the Rio Karma sounds ok, but it's the same price as the iPod. The iPod looks cooler. And I guess if you care about Ogg Vorbis, FLAC then it might matter, but I've never heard of those things. I think the biggest benefits of the iPods are their cuteness, their reliability, and iTunes. iTunes is the best music jukebox that you can get for your computer. True it doesn't play video files (as far as I know) like WMP but WMP is annoying, counter-intuitive and stupid. MusicMatch is annoying too, and cumbersome. I've found that once you get the hang of iTunes, it's the best way to listen to music on your computer. And the iPod only works with iTunes.

I agree that Apple is sketchy because of it's inoperability with other hardware/software. I think that it should let other companies make Apple components or computers. However one counter argument that I've heard is that because everything Apple is made by Apple, then it all is very compatible. And there are less problems because the hardware and software specifications are not spread through out the entire computer industry. It makes sense.

I also think that Mac users like the fact that Apple is very exclusive. It makes you feel like part of something like a clubhouse. The users are not so widespread as windows/pc users so they feel special. I don't mean that in a bad way. But I think that the exclusivity creates a strong brand loyalty, and therefore a blindness to the benefits and detriments of such computer systems.

Like can you use a Pocket PC with Macs? I don't think you can. And that's really annoying. Does Mac have a comperable unit? What if you don't want it?

I still think a display is necessary for the iPod Shuffle. I think they should make an iPlug, which is the size of a hearing aid and fits in your ear, and has flash memory. Then a display wouldn't make sense. And people would be less likely to object.

At-will employees can sue for wrongful discharge if they were fired for a reason that contravenes public policy. It doesn't sound like she was, but it does sound like she was treated poorly after making her sexual harassment complaint and then fired for a baseless reason.

I guess that Jay's Dad talked to a lawyer friend of his that deals with discrimination and wrongful termination and said that she had a pretty strong case. I doubt Ashley will go to trial, but that would be awesome if she did.

I wouldn't think she'd have a case without more evidence and she is not organized enough to keep a log or anything.

Ashley is looking for a job in Ann Arbor right now and just interviewed for a geography/satelite imaging job in Ann Arbor. Keep your fingers crossed!

OK, Macs use the same USB keyboards and mice and the same VGA or DVI monitors as PCs. Actually the original iMac was the first Mac to use USB exclusively for the mouse and keyboard. And to get rid of the floppy drive. Sure you can get a Dell for $400, but a keyboard and mouse only cost them maybe $10. If you're replacing a computer with the Mac Mini you already have the K, V, and M.

Ohmmmm. Steve Jobs is all-knowing and all seeing.
Ohmmmm. Steve Jobs it the alpha and the omega.
Ohmmmm. You must obey the Steve.

Really, it's not cult I swear. (You are getting very sleepy. Very sleepy. When I snap my fingers you will swear off Windows.*Snap!*)

BTW. I have never gotten a virus on my Mac. And there is a conduit for Syncing from PocketPC, but it's a third-party software. I don't have any portable MP3 player, but I think that iTunes is probably the most intuitive and well thought out of any of the jukebox softwares. I use it at work on my PC because WMwhore was so convoluted. I *heart* smart playlists.

Ahh!!! FlameWar™!

P.P.S. Your sister rules! She should so sue their asses.

Between Mr. Kawamoto and Mr. Walker, I'm halfway to using a Mac....

I didn't think about USB Keyboard/Mouse. Then it would be very inexpensive to switch to Mac Mini. And you're right iTunes is the best and most intuitive jukebox. I hate WMP.

It does make sense that you don't get viruses. Of course, the more Macs sell, the more viruses possible. Though I hear that Macs are generally less vulerable.

I think the 3rd option (and the best) is Open Source. I would use Open Source anything (that works decently of course) over Windows or Mac OS anything.

I don't know much about Linux but I would totally use it, if it was a little easier to transition to. It's probably not bad, I'm just lazy.

My roommate, who's a Mac user, is annoyed b/c it's hard to find free software that is Mac compatiable. Like Trillian - only PC. Lots of software is PC-only. You would still be able to use Firefox tho, so that's good.

Ryan also brings up the great point that if hell froze over and Apple became dominant, they they would be a target for viruses too. At the same time, I've only ever had one or two viruses on any of my comptuers, and even then my anti-virus software caught it right away. No harm done.

Open source stuff is great, but getting set up can sometimes be a little bit of a pain if you're not a comptuer person. I mean, I live and breath computers and have no interest in having a laptop that runs only Linux. Especially when there are projects like Xvid, GIMP, and OpenOffice that are available on the PC and all make me smile :)

Macs are cute, cool, fun. I admit that. They have a lot of uses and I can see why some are so loyal. They have a very important role in general tech innovation, and I hope Apple is around for a long long time. I just would rather have a PC, my iPAQ, and all of my fun free software I find on the internet.

Jay, tell your roommate to look for Fire, which is a free Mac OS X chat client for Yahoo, AIM, MSN, ICQ, Jabber, and Rendezvouz. http://fire.sourceforge.net/
I use it all the time.

Anonymous said...

What's Jabber and Rendezvous?

I think that it wouldn't be very fun to use Linux solely on a laptop, but I think it would be cool to have an open source OS.

Actually, the open source stuff like FireFox is less important here, but in sub-modern low-income countries like India. It's very helpful to them and businesses. If the rest of the world uses something we would have to to stay competitive.

That's why we use the metric system right?
