My view of Michigan Proposal 2

Here is the wording for PROPOSAL 2, a proposal to AMEND the Michigan CONSTITUTION!

Article 1, Section 25: "To secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for our society and for
future generations of children, the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only
agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose."

There is a large dispute over the definition of marriage and civil unions, and the rights of gay
and lesbian couples in the United States. I would just like to ask you to keep an open mind and
understand a few points before voting on Proposal 2 on November 2.

By voting for this amendment, you:
* Define Marriage as only between a man and a woman
* However, ELIMINATE the possibility of EVER HAVING A CIVIL UNION IN MICHIGAN!
* DESTROY the option to have not only CIVIL UNIONS, but DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS and RECIPROCAL
BENEFITS, which benefit non-romantic couples who live or rely on each other, not just gay and
lesbian couples.
* Furthermore, VOID DOMESTIC EMPLOYER BENEFITS currently offered by many fortune 500
companies, many universities, and other institutions, which is a decision that should be left up
to the individual company.
* ESTABLISH DISCRIMINATION in the hightest form of law in Michigan

If you are for MARRIAGE as between a Man and a Woman, you cannot vote for Proposal 2!
If you are for CIVIL UNIONS, you cannot vote for Proposal 2!
If you hold that ALL MEN AND WOMAN ARE CREATED EQUAL, you cannot vot for Proposal 2!

Michigan Law already defines marriage between a man and a woman as passed in the Defense of
Marriage Act in 1996. Why do we need a constitutional amendment?

In conclusion, this amendment is redundant in its primary purpose, but takes away more rights that
should be left up to individual companies, such as domestic partner benefits. The amendment is
discriminatory, and hurtful to our state.

Please make sure you know EXACTLY what you're voting for on November 2. It's more destructive
than what you may think. If you have any questions or want to scream at me, let me know.
