There is a common myth in this crazy, mixed up world that the media are liberally biased.
It has been established that many of the media are conservatively biased, such as Fox New, New York Post, KKK Weekly, and everything owned by Rupert Murdoch. Perhaps the other media are centrist so it looks like they are liberal to a conservative.
The nature of the media requires investigation into different matters and should report on them unbiasedly. So, the journalists are required to discover and report both side sides of the story. By doing this journalists encounter unconventional and non-traditional ideas and concepts, that most people may not be forced to examine.
Conservatism tends to keep traditional values and follow historical ideas. Liberalism normally rejects these traditional values or expands upon them in a progressive way. History shows us that as society it tends to move from conservatism to liberalism where yesterday's liberalism becomes todays conservatism. For example, democracy was radical at the time of its inception, and monarcy was the major form of government. Today most monarchys have either been dissolved or consitutionally limited. No conservative would argue back to monarcy, but now conservatives would prefer to keep a more libertarian type governement where the liberals have moved towards a more socialist government.
Because history moves in a liberal direction, rarely backwards, journalists understand upcoming issues, before the general public. Therefore, as a profession journalists may be more liberal but that does not mean they neccessarily report with a liberal bias. They are just more informed on issues and may make more educated decisions.
Another way the liberal media may appear to be biased is because liberal ideas and concepts are news, where traditional, conservative issues are not. It is not news for a man and woman to get married, but it is news for two men or two women to get married. Reporting on what is different or unconventional is what news is, but that is not a liberal bias. There are many ideas and concepts that are liberal, but that doesn't mean there is a bias. These non-traditional events are just different from the status-quo and therefore should be reported.
I think that the problem with the media today are not a conservative or a liberal bias. I don't think there is a conspiracy towards either political ideology. I do think that there is a monetary bias in the media. Events are not reported or mentioned unless they are sensationalized or have the ability to make the network a lot of money. Journalists are no longer writers, but actors. Every story or event is another opportunity for a performance. If there is a bias in the media, it is whatever bias will accumulate more viewers, more money, more control.
There is also no rebellion against this monetary bias. The US media is controlled by five mega-corporations that own all the television, radio, film and print media. It's very difficult for another newspaper or radio station to begin in the atmosphere of war between fierce congolmerates. So the smaller media companies are pushed to the fringe or out of business entirely. Most people don't watch or read the news from these companies because it is not sensationalized into a circus of terror and frenzy.
If you don't believe the monetary bias, watch or listen to the BBC or CBC or some other foreign media in the US. You will notice a big difference in their coverage and view of the same events.
What can people do to avoid a monetary bias? It's not easy because our minds are controlled by the 5 conglomerates of media. Try to buy foreign or smaller newspapers, magazines, and books. Watch TV and listen to radio that is not sensationalized and has a committment to real news and honest reporting. In a money-centric society the media will go wherever the money does, so if we tell them we want honesty and integrity then they will be forced to do that if they want market share.
I don't believe that there will always be a bias in the media, since after all the media are controlled and created for humans. Bias will always be present in everything we see and do. I personally would rather have a slight political bias in either direction than the sensationalized, distorted, hyperbole that today's media has become.
