MOVIE REVIEW - MAMBO ITALIANO

Mambo Italiano is the story of a first-generation Italian man, Angelo, living in Montreal with his very traditional italian parents. The movie immediately begins to draw parallels to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, except that Angelo is gay. One day he decides to move out, to the disapproval of his parents. After his apartment was vandalized he calls the police and one of the officers that arrives on the scene is his childhood friend, Nino. They soon realize their attraction for each other, become lovers, and move into Angelo's apartment. Tension arrises when Angelo wants to come out but Nino does not.
In Mambo Italiano the dialogue is vacant and seemed forced. The characters were more charactures of Italian-Canadians. The plot is decent and has some funny moments but the scenes never seem to reach their true potential. The ending is different from most romantic comedies but still there is no emotional attachment to Angelo, Nino or their families. The movie started with great potential but then tapered off into a banal and unemotional story that seemed like it ended only where the real story started. The end appeared to be tied up neatly, like a good romantic comedy should be but with no real conflict or feeling to pull the audience in. 2.5/5 Stars
