Hellboy is another comic book adaptation but this is a little darker and gritter than the movies from the mainstream comic creators (Marvel and DC), like Superman and Spider-man. At the end of World War II the Nazis, cooperating with Rasputin, former advisor to the Russian Czar, opened a portal to another dimension to unleash an evil upon the earth. A special unit of the US military thwarted the Nazis' plan, but before the portal was closed a small demon-like baby was found. The professor who led the military to the Nazi camp raised Hellboy, as named by the other soldiers. Hellboy along with others, such as Liz and Abe Sapien, work for an FBI bureau investigating paranormal activity.
The plot of "Hellboy" plays out like many other superhero movies. Hellboy's appeal is grittier and darker since he is a demon, though he files his horns to "fit in", but despite his devilish appearance he is very likeable. The humor throughout the film is witty and never corny, so it does not distract from the plot like other comic-book-inspired movies. The movie was fun and action-packed, fact-paced and humorous. The ending was a little abrupt and not neatly tied-up, but like all other blockbuster hopefuls, an insurance plan to leave it open for a sequel is present. 4/5 Stars
